Getting Married in Denmark as a Foreigner – a Short Guide

Denmark is one of the easiest places in Europe for international couples to marry. Here is the process in plain language – with links to the official sources.

1. Apply for the certificate of marital status

If you do not both live in Denmark, you start with the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset). You apply online, upload your documents and pay a fee (DKK 2,100 in 2026). Documents must be in Danish, English or German. A complete application is typically processed within about five working days, but incomplete cases take much longer – apply early. 2. Book your ceremony

The certificate is valid for four months. With it, you book a ceremony time at a municipality of your choice, for example Copenhagen City Hall. In high season the wait for Copenhagen can be several months; nearby town halls such as Frederiksberg, Gentofte or Tårnby can be faster.

3. The ceremony

A civil ceremony takes about ten minutes and can be held in English, German or Danish. Copenhagen City Hall can provide witnesses. You receive your marriage certificate right after the ceremony; ask the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs about an apostille if your home country requires one.
